In Westminster, Colorado there is a trash war. Okay, maybe “war” is a strong word for it, but residents are not happy with a new proposal to have the city provide trash and recycling services to the entire city.
According to an article from the Denver Post, there are currently more than a dozen private companies that provide pickup service. And most people like it that way. It means that they have the opportunity to choose the service (and price) that is best for them. At a recent Westminster City Hall meeting more than 100 residents turned out to voice their opinion. One man asked why the city council would want to disrupt a functioning trash market. Another woman demanded that it be taken to the people for a vote. Clearly the proposal has caused agitation in the Westminster community.
So why does this matter?
The elephant in the room is that people simply do not like being told what to do. Having the city say that you cannot get your trash services from anyone else can be like a punch in the gut for residents who believe in the freedom of choice. According to the DP article it does not matter if the single-hauler proposal would save money, people are willing to spend MORE money if it ensures they have their choice and their say. At the end of the day, for better or for worse, no one likes to be told what to do.
The Future Outlook
If Westminster decides to go with the proposal does this mean they will also eventually try and take over other trash industries? Will the city end up providing rental dumpster or roll-offs?
