is here. The new year has rung in some new opportunities regarding waste disposal in the Lafayette community. There are many types of waste and they all need to be disposed of properly.
Below are some useful tips to help you plan your 2018 clean-up goals:
Getting Rid of “Untraditional” Waste
At some point most people find themselves in need of getting rid of “untraditional” trash such as large electronics, medicine, etc. State law prohibits residents of Colorado from throwing away electronics in trash bins. Here are some methods of properly disposing of these items:
The City of Lafayette offers electronic waste events each January and September to local residents. However, if your disposal needs are urgent, you may contact a local recycling facility such as Eco-Cycle to responsibly recycle your trash at any time of the year.
Hazardous materials (think materials labeled corrosive, flammable, toxic, or reactive) are a no-no for normal trash bins. Residents may take these materials to 1901c 63rd Street in Boulder, for safe and legal disposal. For more information, please visit the Boulder County Hazardous Waste Site.
Expired or Unused Medicine
For the safety and convenience of residents, the Lafayette Police Department will accept expired and unused medications year-round. The Lafayette Police Department provides full details of this valuable service on the LPD website.
In addition to transforming trash into fertilizer, this service allows residents to save money by separating out their food scraps and some yard waste and downsizing their trash bins.
“Trashing” Responsibly in Lafayette
When it comes to being a “responsible trasher” in Lafayette there are a couple simple things to keep in mind:
1. Make sure that your trash bin is on your curb by 7 am on your scheduled pick-up day. Your trash bins must be closed or they will not be picked up.
2. You may purchase any additional bags for trash $4 each at the City of Lafayette Finance Department. Please make sure that each bag is properly labeled. Bags without the appropriate sticker will not be picked up.
3. Residents may schedule a pick-up for bulk items with Republic Waste Service. Please schedule the pick-up at least 24 hours in advance.
Dumpster Rental Permitting
If you are considering renting a dumpster, but the dumpster will not fit in your driveway, you must obtain a “right of way” permit from the city. The approved permit must stay on site for the duration of the rental.
In addition to the permit, the city requires a $500 deposit to cover any damage that might occur as a result of the dumpster taking up space on the road. The deposit will be refunded after the rental if there has been no damage. Whether you are planning on placing the dumpster on your driveway or in the road, be sure to tell the company representative exactly where you want the dumpster to go at the time of booking so that there is no confusion during delivery.
